Customized Artwork Design Softshell Sports Vest with Front Zipper

Publish Time: 2022-06-13     Origin: Custom Sportswear

A softshell vest is the layer people reach for when a jacket is too much and a shirt is not enough. Put bespoke artwork on it and it becomes something else again: staff identification for a production crew, a club layer for a team on the bench, a retail piece for a brand that already sells printed apparel. The garment design is simple — front zipper, stand-up collar, printed panels — which means almost all of the planning effort goes into the artwork and the way it wraps around the closure.

This page covers our custom artwork softshell sports vests with a front zipper: how the fabric is constructed, why a zipped front changes how artwork has to be prepared, what the print can and cannot do on a bonded shell, and how the order is normally put together.

Quick answer: This is a wind-resistant softshell vest with a full front zipper, a stand-up collar and a printed artwork design across the front and back panels. Because the front is split by the zipper, artwork that spans the chest must be supplied as two separate panels with an agreed gap for the zip. Softshell is a bonded fabric with a matte, lightly textured face, so bold artwork reproduces better than fine detail. The back panel is the largest printable area and carries the main design on most orders.

If the design is a logo rather than a full artwork, compare this vest with our softshell sports vest with front printing. If you need a jacket rather than a vest, start from the softshell sports jacket.

Fabric and construction

Element Typical specification Effect on the wearer
Face fabric Woven polyester or polyester-spandex with a matte finish Blocks wind and gives the print a surface to bond to. A matte face produces a slightly deeper print than a glossy one.
Bonded middle layer A membrane or coated film for wind and light water resistance Turns a fleece-like garment into a shell. Confirm whether the claim is water-repellent or waterproof.
Inner face Brushed tricot or a light mesh backer Decides warmth and how the vest slides over a shirt or a playing top.
Front zipper Full-length zip, ideally with a chin guard and a zipper garage A chin guard and garage stop the zip rubbing the neck — a small detail that decides whether the vest is worn all day.
Pockets and hem Zipped side pockets, adjustable or elasticated hem Zipped pockets keep contents secure; an adjustable hem keeps wind out when the wearer is standing still.

An artwork softshell vest is a layering garment first and a printed garment second, so the print has to be planned around the zipper, the collar and the pockets.

Why the front zipper changes the artwork

On a garment with a full front closure, the chest is not one surface — it is two panels separated by the zipper tape. That single fact drives most artwork preparation.

  • Supply the design as two panels. Artwork that crosses the front must arrive as a left panel and a right panel with a defined gap between them. A single joined graphic cannot be printed across the opening.

  • Give the gap explicitly. State the width of the zipper area in millimetres so the two halves line up when the vest is closed, and so the design does not run into the tape.

  • Check the design closed and open. A vest is worn unzipped as often as zipped. A design that only makes sense when closed will look broken most of the time.

  • Watch the drop from the collar. The top of the print should clear the collar and the chin guard, and the bottom should clear any zipped pocket openings.

  • Let the back panel carry the main design. The back is a single, uninterrupted surface and is the largest printable area on the garment — for most teams it is where the artwork belongs.

A full-length zip with a chin guard is the detail that makes a vest comfortable to wear open or closed all day.

What prints well on a bonded softshell

  • Bold shapes and block colour. The strongest results on a matte bonded face. Keep the design graphic rather than photographic.

  • Type above roughly 6 mm. Type smaller than that runs into the surface texture, particularly on a dark colourway.

  • High-contrast palettes. Contrast is what makes artwork legible on outerwear viewed at a distance.

  • Logo elements in embroidery. Anything that must look precise — a crest, a monogram, a partner mark — usually reads better stitched on a softshell than printed.

  • Care instructions with the garment. Wash inside out at a moderate temperature and never iron directly over the print.

Because a softshell is a bonded fabric rather than a simple knit, confirm the print method being proposed for your specific shell. Methods that depend on high heat behave differently on a bonded fabric, so it is worth asking the question rather than assuming.

Where the artwork sits

  • Back panel. The main design. A single surface, large area, no closure to work around.

  • Front left and right panels. A logo, a club mark or the two halves of a chest graphic, split around the zipper.

  • Shoulder yoke. A small mark or a repeat graphic above the chest — visible on the move and popular on crew garments.

  • Hem and side panels. Small marks, flags or a repeat logo. Low cost and easy to add.

  • Collar. Occasionally a small stitched mark. Keep it small enough not to interfere with the collar stand.

Layering garments are ordered in wide size runs, so an accurate size chart and a repeatable fabric reference do more for a programme than any single feature.

Who orders an artwork softshell vest

  • Teams and coaching staff who need a bench and travel layer that carries the club artwork.

  • Production and event crews where staff identification has to be visible outdoors across a full day.

  • Retail and brand programmes adding a layering piece to a printed range, where the artwork already exists and the priority is consistency with the rest of the line.

  • Corporate field teams using the vest as a branded mid-layer that can be worn over a polo or a shirt.

Ordering: sizes, minimums and sampling

  • Fit as a layer. Confirm whether the vest is cut as a mid-layer or an outer layer, because that decides which size a wearer should order.

  • Minimum order quantity. Ask separately for the garment, for each colourway and for each decoration method. A bonded softshell usually carries a higher minimum than a knit garment.

  • Fabric swatch. Approve the actual fabric, and check the artwork against that colour rather than against a white mock-up.

  • Pre-production sample. Ask for a sample with the zipper in place and the artwork applied, so the gap across the front can be judged properly.

  • Repeat runs. Record the fabric reference and the artwork file. On a fabric-led garment, those two records are what make a second run match the first.

Frequently asked questions

Can artwork run across the front zipper? Yes, if it is supplied as two panels with a stated gap. A single joined design cannot be printed across the opening.

Is the vest waterproof? Softshell is normally wind-resistant and water-repellent rather than fully waterproof. Ask for the specific claim the fabric carries.

Can we embroider as well as print? Yes, and it is common on this garment: a printed artwork on the back with an embroidered logo on the chest.

How large can the back print be? Large enough to carry a full graphic, subject to the size of the vest — the back panel is the biggest printable surface on the garment. Confirm the printable dimensions against your size range before finalising the artwork.

How long does production take? It is normally governed by artwork and sample approval rather than by assembly. Storing the approved artwork for later runs is the reliable way to shorten a repeat order.
